Mindfulness

Mindfulness for children: simple tools you can teach straight away

Mindfulness doesn't need to be complicated. These practices are simple, playful, and adaptable — with a focus on emotional safety and choice.

1) Balloon breathing

Invite children to place hands on their tummy and imagine a balloon gently inflating as they breathe in, and softening as they breathe out.

2) Five senses grounding

A quick reset: 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.

3) Weather report feelings

Help children name feelings without judgement: “My feelings today are like… sunny / windy / stormy / foggy.”

Trauma-aware tip: Always offer choice. If a child doesn't want to close their eyes or focus on the body, they can look at a spot on the wall, hold a fidget, or simply listen.
