Course Overview

Our Epilepsy Awareness & Buccal Midazolam Training is a 4-hour course designed for staff working with children who have epilepsy or are at risk of prolonged seizures. It covers epilepsy awareness, seizure management, and the safe administration of buccal midazolam — a rescue medication used to stop prolonged seizures.

This training is delivered by a registered paediatric nurse with specialist clinical experience. It is designed to give staff the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to respond calmly and effectively when a child has a seizure.

Sessions are delivered in-house at your setting across Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, Kent, and London on request. Ideal for schools, nurseries, residential care settings, and any organisation supporting children with complex health needs.

What the course covers

Over 4 hours, you'll build a thorough understanding of epilepsy, seizure management, and the safe administration of buccal midazolam.

Epilepsy Awareness

  • What epilepsy is and the different types of seizures
  • Recognising tonic-clonic, absence, focal, and other seizure types
  • Understanding triggers and individual epilepsy action plans

Seizure First Aid

  • Safe management during a tonic-clonic (convulsive) seizure
  • Protecting the child from injury — positioning and environment
  • Recovery position and post-seizure care

Buccal Midazolam Administration

  • What buccal midazolam is and when it should be used
  • Step-by-step administration technique — hands-on practice
  • Dosage, storage, and record-keeping requirements

Emergency Response & Documentation

  • When to call 999 — knowing the threshold for emergency services
  • Completing seizure records and incident documentation
  • Communication with parents, carers, and healthcare professionals

Important note: Buccal midazolam is a prescription medication. This training equips staff to administer it safely under an individual child's care plan, as authorised by their prescribing clinician. Training does not authorise staff to administer midazolam without an appropriate care plan in place.
