In this Student Spotlight we meet our most northerly based student yet; Jenny lives and works in the Shetland Islands. Hello Jenny!
Name: Jenny Teale
Lives: The Shetland Isles
What do you teach? Baby massage, sensory development classes, messy play classes, mummy and me dance classes, 3-17 year dance classes and I also do birthday parties and large events. I've just done Shetland's first baby and children show.
How long have you been an instructor? I've been a baby massage instructor for only a few months but I've been teaching children in various capacities for over 18 years.
What made you want to become an instructor? I love working with children and their parents. I love being part of their journey and being able to support and nurture them.
Have you always been an instructor? Before I had my own children I worked in a bank, then I trained as a gym instructor.
What’s your favourite part of your job? I love all of my job! Well, apart from maybe doing the accounts and admin lol!
How do you keep your skills up to date? I do online courses and face to face where I can. It's tricky being so far from the mainland. I also read and research to keep my classes current and up to date with the latest information.
What qualities do you think are important in a massage instructor? I think being approachable and friendly but also being able to empathise with parents and how they are feeling. It’s tough being a parent!
Have you learnt anything surprising about baby massage? I've learned how much it calms and relaxes me teaching it! I knew the benefits for the babies and parents but wasn't prepared for it to help me too! I struggle with anxiety and it's definitely helped me too.
What’s your top tip for teaching massage? Enjoy it! If you are relaxed and enjoying it it shows and in turn your customers will feel the same.
Have you had any amusing experiences in your work as an instructor? Ha ha ha! Too many to write but my favourite classes are my 3-6 year old ones as you never know what they are going to tell you!! One asked me just the other day if I slept at our venue and if my bed was on the cupboard.
Who would you most like to teach on one of your courses? I'm not really fussed about famous people I just love seeing all my parents and babies knowing I can help.
