Did you know that it’s Child Safety Week? Each year the Child Accident Prevention Trust selects a theme to focus their activities and this year it’s “Turn off technology for safety”, the idea being that we remove ourselves from our smartphones, tablets and other devices to concentrate better on what’s happening around us.
After all, how many times have we been out and about and seen (or been?) someone distracted by their telephone and not thinking about vehicles or other pedestrians?
If you’ve young children, it can be tempting to have a quick flick through your emails or catch up on with your friends online instead of keeping a close eye on what they’re up to.
And, of course, there’s the use of headphones which can also divert the attention of a listener and prevent them from hearing what’s happening nearby.
So, the CAPT suggest that everyone turns off their technology for an hour a day and concentrates on the people around them, especially children and young people. Check out their website for other advice this week around the theme of “Turn off technology” and see how you can pass their messages on.
